What is it about some websites that just instantly feel right—even if you can't quite put your finger on why?
That instant connection often comes down to subtle visual cues that influence us on a subconscious level—things like layout, color psychology, typography, image choice, and the strategic placement of calls to action. These elements, rooted in data and design principles, shape how we experience a site long before we notice them.
A skilled website designer knows how to use these tools intentionally, creating sites that not only look good but work hard behind the scenes.
Take a look at this recent client website makeover, where we applied these proven techniques to elevate both form and function.
Behind-the-Scenes of a Website Makeover
Gillespie Roofing Inc.’s previous website had served them well, but it was time for an update that matched their ongoing growth and forward momentum. With a clear understanding of what their customers wanted, they provided the content, and we took it from there—building a new site on a modern platform that’s easier to maintain, mobile-responsive, visually impactful, and user-friendly.
The Process
With studies showing that 75% of people judge a business’s credibility based on its website design, we began the project by focusing on the site’s overall visual appeal.
We refreshed and edited the photography to create a brighter, more energized, and technology-forward aesthetic. And because it takes just 50 milliseconds for users to form a first impression, we strategically featured high-impact images in the top banners of each page, while also increasing the use of visuals throughout the site.
Once the new visual direction was in place, we migrated content from the original site, refining the copy for clarity, grammar, and consistency along the way.
The most dramatic transformation can be seen on the Home page. Previously, the page lacked a visual focal point and featured only small images. To immediately capture attention and communicate the quality of their work, we added a bold hero image—ensuring even those who don’t read the text still understand what the company offers.
If you’ve ever felt frustrated with your own website, remember: websites are living tools. We often make updates to our own site multiple times a week. Viewing it as an ongoing process—not a one-and-done project—can help set more realistic expectations and reduce frustration.
