The Magic of a Big Mural? It Can't Be Ignored!

At 226 feet, this street mural for the City of Fontana in California was the largest project we’ve worked on!

We integrated their brand visuals into the design.

Couldn’t resist adding those gorgeous California poppies!

Small icons represented features this community is known for.

Thinking about going big with a wall or street mural? The impact can't be beat! But creating large scale art can be tricky. Here are 10 things to consider before you begin:

  1. What's the story you want to tell? | How will you use colors, visuals, and words to tell it? What symbols will connect to the region or organization?

  2. Branding | What other elements does this need to work with? Public or facility art? Branding guide?

  3. Location & Visibility | How will traffic flow, viewing distance, and natural light impact the final art?

  4. Budget | Scaffolding, permits, surface prep, and premium paints or surface materials add up fast. Get your vendor involved early to help create a realistic budget.

  5. Installation | Partner with your installers to identify the material and installation issues. Will it be thermoplastic, paint, or something else? How will this impact design decisions?

  6. Permits & Permissions | Make sure your concept makes it through the permitting process if it's a public space.

  7. Safety | What safety considerations need to be outlined from the start? Does white have too much glare? Might a graphic be confused with a crosswalk?

  8. Maintenance Plan | Know what cleaning and touch-ups could cost down the road.

  9. Precise Template | Ask your installation vendor to provide a precise design template before you begin. This should include exact measurements and show every possible intruding element. Think manholes and curb cuts on a street, or light switches and outlets on a wall. Without this, you can end up driving up costs with revisions you could have avoided!

  10. Installation Logistics | Will the area need to close during installation—or traffic be rerouted?

Shout out to the city of Fontana, California, who partnered with us to liven up a downtown space with their 226-foot street art project. This project was so much fun to work on!
